Created in 2001,
the workshop initially began under the auspices of the UW Summer
Arts Festival. 2004 was our first year functioning as a part of
the UW School of Music.
In an effort
to create the best educational environment, enrollment to the workshop
has always been limited to approximately forty students. With seven
faculty members, this creates a great teacher to student ratio and
keeps the performing ensembles to a realistic size.
The faculty
has been carefully selected. The two most important criteria being
that each is an active, performing, professional jazz musician and
that each is a highly regarded educator. We feel that this combination
provides the greatest educational experience as our faculty has
the means to communicate their "real-world" experience.
We also place great value on creating an educational environment
that is encouraging and positive.
The workshop
is geared toward students of high school age. Students must have
some experience playing jazz.
